THE HISTORY OF HEARTS UNITED FOR ANIMALS
Dennis and Carol Wheeler of Auburn, NE, founded Midwest Animal Rescue in 1989 as a way to address the needs of homeless and unwanted dogs in the region. In the early nineties, Midwest Animal Rescue became Hearts United for Animals, a no-kill organization dedicated to relieving the suffering of domestic animals by providing quality shelter, sanctuary, and adoptions, and by promoting animal welfare issues. Under Carol’s leadership, with the help and support of husband Dennis, HUA grew into a nationally recognized animal welfare organization that over the years has saved the lives of thousands of dogs and cats. We lost both of these heroes within weeks of each other in the summer of 2024.
Carol and HUA improved the lives of domestic animals in monumental ways, establishing ground-breaking programs such as Tia’s Place, which provides refuge to pets of families who are fleeing domestic violence, Sanctuary Sweethearts, which allows sponsorships for animals who are not available for adoption due to medical or behavioral issues, Jet Set Dogs, which provides relocation opportunities for available dogs across the country, the Proud Pets program, which serves the pets of previously homeless veterans living in specialty housing, Kids United for Animals, a program designed for children ages 8-16 years old who are interested in animal welfare, and the HUA low-cost spay/neuter clinic. HUA has served as a refuge for displaced pets from natural disasters and high-kill shelters across the country. And last but not least, puppy mills in the Midwest have taken a tremendous hit thanks to Carol’s tireless efforts to end this cruel industry.

For more than 30 years, the selfless dedication of Dennis and Carol Wheeler created a haven for animals in need. The Wheelers believed every creature deserves love and care, and they worked with unflagging energy, through long days and some sleepless nights, to ensure that no animal was left behind. Their efforts provided a safe refuge for strays, a second chance for abandoned pets, and a voice for the voiceless.
As we remember Carol and Dennis Wheeler, we honor their extraordinary contributions to animal welfare. They taught us the power of dedication and the importance of treating every life with dignity and respect. Their legacy of kindness and compassion will continue to inspire us and to send the beacon of its light throughout the Midwest and beyond.
