About Donte

Donte was found abandoned in a backyard in a small Nebraskan town.  He had been discarded like garbage in the cruelest of ways.  We knew right away this little old man was something special, despite the fact that he had a mouthful of infected teeth and gums, a missing eye, the other clouded over and obviously painful.  Donte has a quiet dignity about him.  He trusted us immediately and instinctively knew that we would do all we could to relieve his suffering.

Donte’s first vet visit was a concerning one as it was discovered that, in addition to the obvious medical issues, he had an undescended testicle.  Left alone without being removed, this would almost certainly become cancerous.  His neuter surgery was complicated, and it took two surgeons to finally locate and remove the testicle. He lost twenty-two teeth during his dental and needed strong medications to keep the pain at bay. Despite it all, Donte’s spirit remains remarkably intact. He is a gentle, sweet boy—soft in demeanor, slow in movement, and endlessly grateful. At Hearts United for Animals, Donte doesn’t ask for much. A warm bed, fresh water, regular meals, and the kind touch of a caregiver are enough to make his tail wag. He knows and appreciates that he is finally safe and loved.

Donte will spend the rest of his days in therapeutic foster care—a peaceful home with other dogs to keep him company, humans who will love him deeply, and a big yard where he can feel the sun on his fur and the grass beneath his paws.  This brave soul deserved so much better than life had thrown at him,  and now he finally has the peace and comfort for which he most certainly always yearned.
