We could not save the number of dogs that we do or have such an incredible effect on the lives of animals everywhere if it were not for you. You make this work possible. You are the Hearts of Hearts United for Animals.

Turner&RascalBlogSanctuary Sweethearts, Turner and Rascal, are best friends.  They call Hearts United for Animals home and are so happy that they can live their lives together at HUA.  Turner was rescued from a puppy mill in Iowa where he was beaten with a shovel causing permanent back injury.  He can walk, but his back is hunched up in a v shape.  He is also blind.  Rascal was rescued from a puppy mill in Nebraska near the Wyoming border.  The puppy miller swung him in the air by the scruff of the neck while he screamed in fear for his life.  He lived in a crate filled with hay with only a light bulb dangling overhead for warmth.  All of the dogs rescued were young, as the older ones had already perished the extreme heat, cold and lack of veterinary care.  It has been years since Turner and Rascal were rescued.  They understandably have not ever developed an appreciation of humans.  They are so fearful that they have to be sedated for even a routine veterinary examination.  The happy news is that they love and adore one another.  Rascal is Turner's seeing eye dog.  He is very protective of his little Dachshund pal.  When people come near them he sits close to Turner to protect him.  They snuggle in their warm blankets on their bed in their apartment at HUA.  They have a heated and cooled inside space and access to their own private yard through their dog door.  They love to romp around and play together, with Rascal always on guard duty, watching to see who is out and about and ready to lend comfort to his best friend if needed.

While their stories are sad, the life they now lead at Hearts United for Animals is the perfect for them.  They are allowed the freedom that they need to finally know peace in their hearts.  They can live life on their own terms with everything that they need, especially one another.  It is a huge commitment to care for these two special needs fellows for life, but one that HUA is willing to make in order to provide them with a happy place where they can be free, content and well cared for forever.

Please visit their Sanctuary Sweetheart pages to sponsor one or both of these dear boys, or any of the other Sanctuary Sweethearts at HUA.  Your caring and support means the world to them.  As a sponsor you will receive a packet in the mail with a photo and bio of your Sweetheart and a refrigerator magnet so you can look at your Sweetheart every day and know that you are giving the gift of life and love to your special needs friend.

Dulcea and her pals at Hearts United for Animals would like to wish you a very Happy Valentine's Day and thank you so much for your generous support that saved their lives and allows them to be happy as Sanctuary Sweethearts.  The Sanctuary Sweetheart program is for dogs who are not adoptable due to age, medical or behavioral condition.  Dulcea came from a horrible puppy mill in Nebraska.  Her eyes were so severely damaged that they both had to be removed to spare her further suffering.  When she came to HUA several years ago she was on death's door, but today she is the happiest, spunkiest little ray of sunshine you could ever imagine.  She has a permanent foster home with Aunt Jean, who is Florence Nightingale and Mother Theresa wrapped into one for so many downtrodden, sick and forlorn animals who have come through our doors.  Jean talks to Dulcea all day so that she knows where to find her and feels comfort at all times.  Dulcea has surprised everyone by learning to hop into bed by herself and even do stairs.  She has been known to make special guest appearances at local events urging the public to adopt rather than buy animals from pet stores.  People say, "oh she must be tired, she is sleeping".  When she is in her snuggle sac with Jean it looks as if her eyes are closed and she is napping.  Jean then explains that she isn't sleeping, she just does not have eyes due to the abuse at the puppy mill.  We are sure that many people are now spreading the word to their friends about how the parents of pet store puppies are treated due to the special public appearances by our dear little Dulcea.

Dulcea has also been an activist in pet store protests.  Twice she came out to help HUA protest the Petland at the corner of 120th and West Center Road in Omaha.  This Valentine's Day she is proud to announce success!  The Petland store closed for good this month...an amazing gift to the puppy mill dogs.  No longer will sick puppies whose parents suffer in large commercial breeding establishments be sold here.  We thank Dulcea for her efforts to help fight for those still suffering in the puppy mills.

From our Sweethearts to yours, we wish you a wonderful Valentine's Day.  To learn more about Dulcea and her other Sanctuary Sweetheart friends please visit their special webpage.  For just $25/mo you can sponsor a HUA Sanctuary Sweetheart.

Ingrid and the Sanctuary Sweethearts at HUA would like to wish you a Happy Valentine's Day.  Hearts United for Animals is dedicated to the philosophy that all dogs deserve happy healthy lives with people who love them. Some dogs find that home with us as Sanctuary Sweethearts. They are animals who are not up for adoption for various reasons including health, age and personality issues.  Ingrid is one of the senior Sanctuary Sweethearts.  She has been with us for 10 years.  She was rescued from a puppy mill in the year 2000 when she was only 2 years old.  We do not know what happened to Ingrid to make her so fearful.  She trusts no human.  She is completely petrified.  She is happy at the sanctuary because she knows that she can live life on her own terms.  We give Ingrid the space she needs to be happy.  She is free to play with her dog friends and takes much comfort in their presence.  They know how fragile she is and take pride in protecting her and comforting her.  Without your generous support our Sanctuary Sweethearts would not have the option of this happy place to call home, a place where they can live their lives knowing peace, joy and love.  Please visit Ingrid and all of the Sanctuary Sweethearts of HUA on their own special page of our website and join us in wishing the these sweeties a very Happy Valentine's Day, and every day.
