Donate to the animals in need

We could not save the number of dogs that we do or have such an incredible effect on the lives of animals everywhere if it were not for you. You make this work possible. You are the Hearts of Hearts United for Animals.

BlogG2LDOn May 29th, 2014, as a Hearts United for Animals supporter, you will have a unique opportunity to more than double your donation to help HUA ease pain and suffering for dogs and cats in need and help save lives.  On May 29th, HUA will once again participate in Give to Lincoln Day, sponsored by The Lincoln Community Foundation.  In addition to qualifying HUA for a portion of a $300,000 match pool of funds, donations made to Hearts United for Animals for this special giving day will also be matched dollar for dollar by The Gary and Mary West Foundation, resulting in donations being matched MORE THAN DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR.  Our goal for the day is $150,000, double that of last year's event.  Funds raised will be used to help save the lives of many more dogs and cats needing immediate emergency assistance.  Please help us meet our goal by donating and spreading the word to your friends and family.

You can set up your donation now to happen on May 29th by going to http://givetolincoln.razoo.com/Hua.  It is automatically set up to run  your donation on May 29th.  Donations must be made through this site to qualify.  For donations over $10,000 or for any questions or concerns please contact lori@hua.org.

Dogs like June and her pups thank you in advance for caring about them and helping to save their lives.  On the evening of Mother's Day, June arrived at an emergency animal clinic, weak and in shock.  She had been having trouble giving birth.  She had a dead puppy that was breach and could not be pulled out.  Her family had no money for her care and she was left that way much too long.  Hearts United for Animals received a call from the clinic just as tornado sirens were going off and the city was running for cover.  After a quick "yes we will help", June was soon having surgery to save her life and the lives of her two remaining babies.  It was touch and go and the surgeon had to work quickly, but June and one beautiful boy and one lovely girl baby made it through.  Your donations help HUA to be able to say yes to saving lives like that of June and her pups on a moments notice.  Please help June and her pups to pay it forward to other dogs and cats in need by participating in this special giving day opportunity to more than double the number of lives we can save.  Your support means the world to so many dogs and cats who would otherwise perish without immediate assistance.

Carrick and his pals at HUA received an exciting message this week from a wonderful supporter who wishes to do all she can to help HUA save lives and provide comfort for dogs and cats in need.  Her greatest desire is to achieve freedom from suffering for all animals.  To help increase the amount of care HUA can provide for those who need us most, she decided that starting today through July 4th she will match all donations dollar for dollar until the goal of $10,000 is reached!

This dear, generous supporter, who wishes to remain anonymous, put Carrick in charge of the festivities for Freedom Week.  She knew that he was the oldest, wisest and has known great suffering in his life.  Carrick lives in the meeting room at HUA.  He is estimated to be 13 years old.  He was found in the country where he had been wandering by himself for a very long time.  He was weak, filthy, emaciated, covered in tumors, heartworm positive and deaf.  The HUA veterinarian was not even sure that Carrick would survive heartworm treatment.  Carrick disagreed though and knew he could do it, and he did!  He is one very happy old man now.  Most days he can be found snoozing away on his big soft bed.  He only likes to be outdoors for a short while, much preferring his new indoor accommodations.  He still marvels at the fresh food and water that are all his, and he adores the affection of all of the people who pass through to see him each day.  He was very excited to learn about Freedom Week and knew he had to pull out all the stops to get word out to the HUA supporters.  Carrick knows how wonderful it is to be rescued, comforted, loved and freed from years of suffering.

Throughout the week Carrick will be featuring his friends who have also been freed from lives of suffering.  They will be joining him in the week long party to celebrate this marvelous gift.  The celebration, including many more dogs dressed in their best party attire, will take place on the HUA Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/heartsunitedforanimals.  Carrick will post totals regularly so that everyone knows how close he and his pals are to meeting their $10,000 goal - and turni ng that $10,000 into $20,000!  Although he is deaf, Carrick can see well (especially with his snazzy new glasses) and is very sharp - so he has been appointed the accountant for the fund-raising event.
Carrick asks that you please consider a donation for Freedom Week so that more animals can be spared from lives of suffering and go on to be content and free.  He and his friends send their heartfelt gratitude and promise to do their best to entertain you and bring you heartwarming stories of happiness and love on Facebook throughout the week.

Many thanks go out to the anonymous donor providing match funds, and to all of our wonderful supporters to who are always there to make sure that HUA can assist dogs & cats in need.

Turbo has been waking up every morning, looking at the calendar, and hoping that Thursday, May 16th, will arrive soon!  Today he realized that it is getting very close, so he wanted to make sure to tell all of his friends to save the date.  All donations made to Hearts United for Animals on May 16th through the Give to Lincoln Razoo web page will qualify our shelter and sanctuary for a proportional share of a $200,000 match pool of funds from the Lincoln Community Foundation.  Turbo heard that last year the shelter was in the top spot for donations all day and that over $65,000 was raised to help the animals at HUA.  He is an excellent mathematician and he knows how far that much money goes to help dogs and cats in need.  He is also up to speed on technology and suggests that if you have a smart phone you may wish to plug in a calendar reminder that says "Turbo says to donate online at http://givetolincoln.razoo.com/hua".  Turbo and his friends will be cheering us on and watching the totals on the Give to Lincoln Day website on the 16th, as well as following all of the exciting happenings on our Facebook page.  They know that so many deserving animals can be helped through your generous donations and matching funds from the Lincoln Community Foundation.  Turbo has promised all of his buddies a round of special treats at the end of the day if we can beat last year's total.  He doesn't need much of an excuse to throw a party, but we think that would be a great reason!  Please help Turbo meet his goal on May 16th.

PS - Turbo has a secret that he wants to share.  If you go to our Give to Lincoln donation web page now, you can schedule your donation to happen automatically on the 16th, so there is no way you will forget.  Right above the donation button make sure it says Make This Donation Occur "On a Giving Day".  It is that easy!

Stay up to speed with all of the latest Give to Lincoln Day and Hearts United for Animals news by becoming a fan of our Facebook page.  Turbo loves social media and wants to keep in touch with his friends.

HUA's First Annual Poolside Buffet Pawty and Fundraiser held on July 23rd, was a smashing success! Hosted by Bruce Billesbach at his gorgeous home in Ponca Hills, the benefit raised over $12,000 for the 400 canine and feline residents at HUA. The late Bexar (pronounced Bear) Billesbach, was the inspiration for the pawty.  His photo greeted the party attendees and we know that Bruce's beautiful, loving boy was with us in spirit. The night could not have been more fun! There was live entertainment, valet parking, a buffet by Metro Culinary School and over 30 lovely items on the silent auction tables. We had many $500 or more level sponsors for the benefit.  Please help us thank them and support their businesses.  Sponsors were Mobile Animal Clinic, Three Dog Bakery, Immediate Solutions, Rebel Interactive, Pawsitively Treasured, Ideal Construction, Woodhouse Auto Family, Tenant Data Services, and Veterinary Eye Specialists of Nebraska. We can't thank Bruce, our sponsors, our silent auction item donors and our party attendees enough for making the night such a wonderful time to remember! Please enjoy all of the many fun photos from the event in our album in the Photos tab of our Facebook page. They were taken by Lisa Tegtmeier, HUA volunteer, and Kim Justus of Kimotofoto.com.

A tribute to Bexar greets party attendees at the entrance.

In December 2008 Sue Sturgis, from Lincoln, Nebraska, sold her business to dedicate all her time to the love of her life - helping animals.  With years of experience as a fashion coordinator and successful business owner Sue decided to open her own store, one where all profit would go to help homeless and suffering animals.  Sue and her husband Darren, and two rescued dogs Emba and Muggy (the official greeters) work day and night to help provide a better life for shelter dogs and increase awareness about animal welfare issues.

The store, Cause for Paws, located at 5700 Old Cheney Road in Lincoln, Nebraska, accepts gently used clothing and accessories and household items - anything in good condition.  It is not a typical second hand store.  Merchandise is all of good quality, beautifully organized and tastefully displayed.  It looks like an attractive level of a department store.  Customers receive great personal service.  People bring in donations and stay to shop.

Recently HUA directors Carol Wheeler and Sally Carter, along with Canary and Ciana, Chihuahuas rescued from a Nebraska puppy mill, stopped in to say hello at Cause for Paw and thank Sue and Darren for helping so many of the dogs  in need at HUA.  Ciana, who was not known to warm up quickly to new people, took an immediate liking to Sue and Darren.  It was soon decided they would adopt her to become the littlest animal rescue ambassador at Cause for Paws.  Ciana is carried around the store, always in Sue's arms, and is loving her new life as storekeeper and beloved family member.  Her friend Canary was soon after adopted by a wonderful family in Lincoln.

Please consider helping Cause for Paws by donating gently used items or stopping in to shop.  Make sure to thank Sue and Darren for dedicating their lives to the animals in need.  They are appreciated tremendously by the Hearts United for Animals organization and the animals we rescue who are so very much in need of support.

You can visit the Cause for Paws website at http://www.causeforpawslincoln.com.
