Starved, Freezing, Giving Birth – Esme Rescued by HUA Employees from Under Trailer Home

Uncategorized 21 Comments

Esme1Late in the afternoon a call came in that a small, very pregnant Miniature Pinscher mix was abandoned in a town near the shelter.  The caller said she was living under a vacant trailer home and looked like a pot bellied pig.  She was frightened, starving, freezing cold,  and was begging and scavenging for food.  The caller thought she had been bred by two Labrador Retrievers.  Neighbors tried to rescue her but could not get her out from under the trailer.  HUA employees John and Shaun took off immediately to go to her rescue.  When they arrived they had to tear off part of the skirting to the home and crawl around on the wet ground dodging electrical cords.  Once under the trailer they  heard rustling but couldn’t see her.  John looked up to find that she crawled into the insulation and was giving birth.  She had one dead and one live puppy.  John carefully handed the live puppy to Shaun while he worked on getting the mother dog out.  Once the boys were in the van with mom and pups they called the HUA vet to be on stand-by for their arrival at the shelter.  The boys arrived covered in mud from head to to, holding the surviving puppy like a live grenade.  Over the next few hours 2 more live puppies were born.  All are doing well.  Esme is so happy to be rescued!  She is very grateful for the help given to her and her puppies.  She is so content and relaxed at the shelter, enjoying being able to take care of her puppies in a warm environment where all her needs are provided for, where she has warm bedding, good food and people who adore her.  Please join us in wishing Esme and her puppies – Jello, Sprinkles and Cupcake – a very Happy New Year!

Would any of puppies be out for adoptions?
If they do, how can I get one?

They will be able to be adopted when they are 16 weeks old (they have to be spayed or neutered before placement and we do that at about 16 weeks). If you would like to apply to adopt one that would be great. The application is online on our website…here is the info and application link: You can write to Jenny, our adoption coordinator, at if you have questions. Thanks :) Lori

What a wonderful story! HUA does it again! How about that big smile on Esme’s face in the third picture?

Got see Esme and her puppies today. I’m sure Esme thinks she is in heaven! She and her babies were all snuggled in a very soft warm bed with several soft blankets and all the food she wants–just inches away!

    What a beautiful story-like a fairytale. Why haven’t I
found your web site before? I would like to come to
live or work there. Esme is so happy with herself you
can see her saying “aren’t my babies wonderful and didn’t
I do a good job?” You can see by the shine on her coat
and the puppies that they are so wonderfully being taken
care of. Thank you John, job well done. Love love love
the names of the puppies. the most original names I have
ever heard for a litter. Thank you for being there for
so many animals that are fortunate enough to find their
    way to your organization.

Esme and the kids have a buddy! They are so happy. Their Buddy Darlene Olshansky, from Iowa City, Iowa sent them this message: “Please tell Esme that I am very proud of her for being so brave and so strong. And I will support whatever is needed to get them all good homes.” Esme, Jello, Sprinkles and Cupcake send Darlene many happy, grateful mamma and puppy kisses. Many special thanks to Darlene for helping with the care of this beautiful little dog family.

I’ve been a fan, a buddy, and a “patron” for so long that you guys already know that I think you all walk on water (with your brood dog-paddling behind you?), but I just had to tell you how wonderful the Esme and family story is. And for those viewers who are new to the site, for whom this story may have been a first, yes, the people at HUA really are this awesome, and the Esme story is the rule rather than the exception! WOW!!!

Esme is a sweetheart. She gave me a little kiss on Sunday. She is just as sweet in person as she looks in the pictures!

WAY TO GO, HUA!!! As always – great work John. I’m so happy she made it there on time and has some live puppies thanks to your quick action. All the best for ESME!

As always, thank you HUA, for doing a job well done. On that note, I wanted to offer prayers for the one puppy that did not make it. This puppy is over the rainbow bridge, warm and cozy, and happy that mom and siblings were able to find such a wonderful place. Dear puppy, you may be gone from this world, but you are not forgotten…I love you.

They are all doing great! Esme is a great mom. The puppies are happy and healthy and getting cuter every day. Esme loves her time with people and can’t wait to go for walks each day and get some loving. They are a great bunch.
