God Bless You All and hopefully Ruskin will find a good home in the new year.

I will never understand how people can allow this sort of thing to happen and it's only thanks to organisations like yours that gives dogs a real chance in life. Again God Bless you all.

Hi Connie, We used oral Ivermectin for Ruskin. I would thoroughly research Promeris and if you decide to use it make sure it is at a time when you can stay at home with your dog to monitor for reactions. My co-worker's dog almost died from a bad reaction to this drug. We researched it and found that bad reactions to this drug seem to be common. Do a search for "Promeris reaction" and "Promeris class action" as it appears there may be litigation coming over the reactions and deaths allegedly caused by this new topical drug. We have always used Ivermectin, and while some vets may say it is harsh on the dog we haven't ever witnessed a reaction, it works every time and is relatively inexpensive. It is the same drug that is in Heartgard monthly heartworm medication but in a higher dose. One caution with Ivermectin is that some collies have a genetic defect that makes them sensitive to it. This advice is all anecdotal, based soley on our experiences. We are not licensed veterinarians. Just wanted to share what we do and what we've heard. The amount of time is different for every dog, but with medication I would think you would see results fairly quickly, at least as far as the discomfort is concerned. I hope your little gal is better very soon. Write and let us know how she is doing. All the best!

Hi ,
I recently adopted a shepherd boxer mix puppy from our local shelter, and she now has Demodetic mange mites. I was wondering what kind of medication did Ruskin receive. My vet prescribed medicated shampoo and now I am awaiting the medication called Promeris. Any suggestions for the itching and how long will it take to heal?

God bless you Ruskin. You are a beautiful creature and very blessed to have found HUA. I have just come across the organization today and find it to be the best I have ever seen. This is my dream in life...to rescue them all. I have four rescues of my own and have found homes for numerous dogs over the years. Good luck Ruskin, you will be a blessing to a family that doesn't even know it yet.

Hi Pam. It was just Taste of the Wild, a little canned Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, but mostly the mange medication that did the trick. Without that he would still be bald.

Ruskin looks marvelous! He is so dear. I remember when he first arrived at HUA. He was very happy to be with people and loved to play with a tennis ball. How did you balance his immune system other than feeding Taste of the Wild? Ruskin, I hope you find your forever home real soon!

I am a volunteer at HUA and have interacted with Ruskin. He is ecstatic with energy now and such a sweet and people friendly dog! He will make a fantastic family member for someone looking for a fun loving energetic young family pet!

Thanks Beth. We will pass on your kind comment to Ruskin. Demodectic mange is not contagious. A certain amount of demodectic mange mites live on all dogs. They grow rapidly with immature or unhealthy immune systems (in Ruskin's case starvation and very poor care). Now that Ruskin's immune system is healthy and he has been treated it should not reoccur. He is on high quality food at the shelter (Taste of the Wild) and is really thriving. He looks and feels great. We have no reason to believe this would change and would recommend keeping him on high quality food, just as we recommend with all the dogs.

Ruskin, you’re one good lookin’ dog now! Is mange contagious to people? Will Ruskin get it again?
