Puppy Thrown from Moving Car Survives Severe Injuries

Uncategorized 47 Comments

It was a quiet afternoon at the shelter when a man and his teenage son pulled up in a pickup.  The dad informed us that his son found a puppy in the in a ditch in the country the night before while out having a good time with his buddies and wondered if we could help.  We were anticipating a Labrador, or some other typical breed for the rural areas.  The son got out of the truck and presented our volunteer with a little yellow puppy who weighed less than 3 pounds.  He was the most adorable little thing we’d ever laid eyes on.  We of course said we were happy to take him.

We noted that the little pup was very snorty and his breathing was labored.  He lapped up soft food and water but we could tell he needed immediate veterinary care, so minutes later he was on his way to the Animal Emergency Clinic in Omaha.  We were thinking antibiotics and time on oxygen would fix him up.  We were very disappointed, as was the veterinary staff, to learn that he had severe injuries consistent with being thrown from a moving vehicle.  He had a scar on his head, his eye was red from trauma, a rib was fractured and his jaw was broken and severely displaced.  We were sick about it.  Despite his injuries this gorgeous little pup wagged his tail, squirmed and was so happy to be with people.  The jaw break was at the TM joint making surgery not an option.  The vet said that sometimes putting a tape muzzle on to make the jaw bone grow back into place works and that was our only option.  It would mean syringe feeding the pup for 3 to 4 weeks until the jaw healed.  We said of course, we have to try.  After a weekend at the emergency hospital our little pup, now named Kid Rock for his love of the music he listened to in the car on the way to the vet, was able to come back to the shelter.  The HUA staff fed him every 2 to 4 hours by syringe giving him pain meds through the syringe as well.  Kid Rock was so sad and in so much pain that it broke our hearts, but we knew if he could get through it he would be the happiest, sweetest puppy ever.  He whined and nuzzled his head into our arms for the first several days.  Although still not happy to have his mouth taped shut, soon after he was back to himself and begging for his next feeding.

Kid Rock’s jaw has healed faster than anticipated and he now has the tape muzzle off after 3 weeks.  He is still weak and fighting infection.  He is eating soft food for now with two different kinds of antibiotics administered.  His nasal trauma is still healing and he makes some snorting noises that sound like he is gasping to breath.  He is happy as can be though and got to play with the other puppies at HUA for the first time this weekend.  He thought it was positively delightful.  He loves lapping up every bite of food on his own and just can’t wait to get out to lavish hundreds of kisses on his care givers.  In addition to being too cute for words he has the sweetest, most loving personality.

We cannot imagine what caused someone to throw this gorgeous little pup from a moving car and leave him to die in a ditch in the country.  Perhaps drugs?  There is just no reason on earth for such a horrible thing to happen.  We are so glad that he was found and that he had such wonderful medical care.  The entire staff at two veterinary clinics have fallen madly in love with him and are as grateful as we are for the divine intervention that caused the young man and his friends to stop to check their tires at that very spot by the ditch late that night.

We are gladly accepting monetary donations for Kid Rock’s care (costs are currently at close to $1,000), and although he is not quite ready for adoption yet if you are interested please write to jenny@hua.org and she will keep you informed of his progress.  He still has some follow up vet visits to do and will need to be stronger in order to be neutered and micro-chipped but he would LOVE to have a great home waiting for him when he is ready to go.

We had a similar thing happen here only the idiots threw a kitten out of a car window on a 6 lane highway…luckily, right in front of a local radio personality who slammed on his brakes, grabbed the animal, followed the people and got their license plate. From that story, the morning crew went on to do an adoption show every Friday morning and have adopted out several hundred animals. The people who tossed Kid Rock will have to answer to a higher power.

Poor lil guy. I assume Kid Rock did something that normal puppies do.. “like that was a surprise to his previous owners”… The worst part of this story is most likely this probably wasnt the first time this idiot threw a puppy from a moving car ! The best news is Kid Rock ended up at HUA, the best rescue in the midwest ! Greta & Screetch”Molly” (HUA ALUM) are happy he will eventually get the good home he desirves.

What an inspiring story of the faithfulness and trust that dogs have for humans in spite of horrible mistreatment. I will send a donation and I hope many others do, also.

Until we can change the law and bring these type of people to justice, they will keep on doing this and getting away with it we need to let our politicians know that we will not take it anymore and we need justice…

What a PRECIOUS baby Kid Rock is! How anyone can mistreat God’s creatures is beyond my understanding. It is truly a blessing the young man just happened to stop where he did to find this little fellow, and even a greater blessing he delivered him to HUA! Soak up all the love and attention available while you’re there healing, Kid Rock, and may you soon find the perfect, loving home! Sending love & tummy rubs.

It never ceases to amaze me just how cruel some people can be. When I was about 9, I was in a car with my auntie and one of her boyfriends. He threw a puppy out of a window one time and another time it was a kitten, which he then ranb over.. As a kid I could do nothing but when I turned 17, I started up an animal rights group (long gone now). But I am still into animal rights, nearly 30 years on.

To read about stories such as that of ‘Kid Rock,’ disgusts me to no end but, to learn that he has found friends with Hearts United for Animals, put back some of the hope that is needed when it comes to animals and their sometimes pitiful lives. Keep up the excellent work – glad to have come across your site this morning

I was lucky enough to spend some one-on-three time with the little pups who think they’re BIG pups: Kid, Norm, and Cadbury. They are all so adorable.

Norm is going to be a belly rubbin’ loving maniac. He has no hair on his big healthy puppy belly and loves having it rubbed!

Kid – oh, he’s a player. Attacking toys is great fun. “Die you fuzzy blue star! I’ll get you yellow squeaky thing!” Nothing is going to hold this Kid back from now on!

And dear Cadbury… what a bundle of love. My lips are chapped from all of her kisses!

Thanks to all who have supported Kid Rock and all of the others at HUA. HUA couldn’t do it without you.

As the honored recipient of two beyond-awesome dogs from HUA, I can only say Kid could not be in better hands. Although I live in the Pacific Northwest, I support HUA with all my heart, thought, and charitable contributions. They don’t care what color, sex, age, or breed a needy furbaby is in, they just take them in with open arms and do whatever is best for the baby. God Bless HUA, and all who have ever rescued a furbaby in need, or stopped an act of cruelty. Knowing there are people that really care, and are actively fighting cruelty to animals, makes this world tolerable in the fact of unspeakable acts of hatred and cruelty. Fight on!

Im very thankful to HUA for taking this little dog in and taking the time and money to care for this little stranger. You are all hero’s in my eyes. Glad HUA cares. Still disgusts me that people do such miserable, mean things to other living beings, but I’m very glad that some people still have some sense of right and wrong left, and that a handful of those folks bother to do something about it. Thanks for taking care of this puppy, but also thank you for taking care of all of the other puppies and other kitties; thanks for taking care of other creatures. =)

I’m embarassed to know that whoever did this considers themselves part of the human race!! We had something similar happen to a puppy here in our city (Calgary). Someone caused serious injuries to a doberman puppy (now named Mikey) and left him to die in a bloody pet carrier outside of vetrinary office. Luckily, the police have caught the person responsible (a woman), and the case is pending. Mikey, fortunately, is recovering very well, but there is no way to know if the head trauma he suffered will be permanent.

I really hope Kid Rock has a great recovery like Mikey. I already have 2 rescue dogs, otherwise I’d consider adopting him! HUA – I hope you continue your great work for years to come!

Wow why would anybody throw a puupy out of a moving car? It’s just like throwing out a little kid. It’s just wrong. Puppies are small and defenseless when being thrown out of a car. It just doesn’t even make any sense to throw a puppy out of a car. It’s just terrible and rude and terrible and mean and terrible and bad. And did I mention terrible?

I know the article states his injuries are consistent with being thrown from a car and maybe it did happen that way. Let’s ask another question. Is it possible that he jumped from the bed of a truck or something without the owner’s knowledge? I know there are sleezebags in the world that don’t share the same love for animals as we do, but I just don’t want to believe the worst….
