The best way for people to tell if they are dealing with a puppy mill is to insist on going to their place and meeting the parents and seeing ALL of the dogs. That way they can't just bring a couple of dogs into the house or meet at a gas station and fail to show the horrible conditions the dogs actually live in. Multiple breeds and many, many dogs is a sign they are a puppy mill. Also if they are a good breeder they should be able to provide paperwork saying that the parents have been tested for breed specific genetic defects, etc. Of course we recommend that people not give their money to breeders at all but rather adopt from shelter or rescue group. Supporting the breeding industry is in our opinion socially irresponsible when there are so many homeless animals in the United States and abroad. Thanks for writing!
