Newton
Newton's story is similar to that of millions of dogs across the country. He was found wandering the shelter property back in 1998 when he was just a youngster. He was terribly afraid, hungry...just plain a pitiful sight to see. It happens all the time. People get a puppy and that puppy grows larger than they expected, the fun wears off and then they dump them to fend for themselves. Dogs are found in alarming numbers at HUA and at other shelters everywhere. People dump them in the middle of the night on the shelter grounds, in ditches near the property, tie them to cinder blocks in front of the building, leave puppies inside of empty dog food or grocery sacks, just whatever they can think of so that they can get their dog near the shelter hoping an employee or volunteer will find the dogs before they are run over, starve to death or are captured as prey by wild animals. But they don't care enough to be able to face people inside the shelter and surrender their dog in person. Fortunately for Newt he didn't wander off and was found right away.
Another part of Newt's plight is that he was an unremarkable dog to adopters. He was big, male and a mixed breed. These types of dogs are euthanized by the millions across the U.S. each year because no homes can be found. They are not bad dogs, in fact like Newt they're really spectacular dogs. People just don't recognize it because smaller, female and purebred dogs are more popular to adopt. Even though potential adopters were told what a loving, wonderful dog Newt was, he never did get adopted. The sad fact is that bigger male dogs without a specific breed name just don't even get considered most of the time. Newt has been here so long now that this is his home and it would break his heart to leave. Newt's story and Newt's heritage might be altogether unremarkable to many, but to us he is a real Sweetheart! He will stay here and know love and devotion forever, and this happy boy who is completely perfect in our eyes returns that love and devotion a hundred times over each and every day. The lovely white heart shape on Newton's head reminds us every day that he is wonderful part of Hearts United for Animals. He is a symbol of hope that one day all dogs will live their lives happily in homes, never experiencing even one day of hunger or fear.
