SAD NEWS
Grandma Duchess has gone to the Rainbow Bridge. She passed peacefully after declining in her old age. She was spunky until the end. She would always hobble over for a kiss and a pat on the head. Often it took her a long time to get up and when she could no longer get on the furniture in her big retirement apartment at HUA we put the cushions on the floor for her. She loved her life at HUA, and we loved her dearly. We will never know what really happened in New Orleans, but we got the impression that her life at HUA was better than she had known before. She was rescued from a poor area where dogs were kept outdoors chained to trees, and she obviously had been without vet care for a very long time when she arrived. We are glad that she got to know a life of freedom and love at HUA. No matter who resides in her space in the future it will always be Grandma Duchess's apartment to us. We would like to send a special thanks to her Buddies who helped provide her comfort and care while she was with us.

Duchess was rescued from the Katrina hurricane. She's a terrific dog who loves people. She has a great personality and really loves her soft bed. She is an easy liver. She is a shepherd mix who was born in 1995. She weighs about 45 pounds. She has been spayed and is current on health care.
Duchess is so happy that she has Buddies!
Her Buddy, Cassie Smid, sent her this message: "Duchess, you are such a brave girl! It must have been hard for you to leave your home, but I'm so happy that you are in a safe place where you can be looked after. I'm sure that someday soon you'll have a permanent home where you will be loved and spoiled!" Duchess sends Cassie grateful kisses.
Her Buddy, Mary Alberts, from Omaha, Nebraska, sent her this message: "Duchess, we too were homeless, afraid and lost and we are so glad that HUA rescued you! We are praying that you find your forever home soon just like we did! We can tell you are a good girl who deserves it. Love, Dodge and George" Duchess sends Mary, Dodge and George many happy, grateful kisses.
Hearts United for Animals is a national no-kill shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization. Hearts United for Animals does long distance adoptions if there are safe flights and we have volunteers in the area to do a home visit. We require an application, references and a home visit to adopt one of our dogs. Our dogs are all spayed or neutered and are current on health care. We can cat test a dog if requested. Buddies are people who help support the dog and send them love while they are waiting for their new home. The dog does not live with the Buddy.
